Norvasc 10 mg

Norvasc (Amlodipine)
Norvasc is used to treat high blood pressure and to treat angina.
Norvasc
Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker that contains amlodipine besylate. It is obtained in tablet form (2.5mg, 5mg, and 10mg).

Uses

Novasc regulates the heart rate and helps the heart receive a good supply of blood. Therefore it is a useful treatment for high blood pressure and angina. When blood pressure is normalized there is a decrease in the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

Dosage

Take this medication as directed. The tablets should be taken orally with water. Your doctor will monitor your condition and, if necessary, he or she may increase the dose gradually. For best results, there should be a constant supply of Norvasc in your blood stream therefore take each daily dose at the same time.

Do not stop taking Norvasc unless ordered by a doctor. High blood pressure is known as the ‘silent killer’ because it has no obvious symptoms. This means you will not know if your blood pressure is high or not, even if you are feeling well.

Side effects

Light-headedness, dizziness, flushing, swelling of the ankles or feet, or headache. If these last for more than a couple of days, notify a doctor. To avoid dizziness and light-headedness, rise slowly if you have been lying or sitting.

Serious side effects: fainting, irregular or fast heart rate, pounding heart, or vision changes. Notify a doctor immediately.

Although the chances are unlikely, an allergic reaction to this drug should be immediately reported to a doctor. The symptoms would be trouble breathing, severe dizziness, swelling, itching, or rash.

Important Warnings

If you are allergic to amlodipine besylate or other calcium channel blockers, or any other medical compound, inform your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you have a medical history that includes aortic stenosis (a structural heart problem) or liver disease.

Some drugs can interact adversely with Norvasc. Therefore it is important that you tell the doctor about all medicines you regularly use. This includes all vitamin supplements, herbal products and any other prescription drugs.

Norvasc may cause dizziness so be very careful if you do any activity that requires you to be alert such as driving or operating machines. Restrict your intake of alcohol.

Elderly people should be careful when using Norvasc as they may be more prone to the side effects, particularly dizziness.

If you are going to have medical or dental surgery, inform the doctor or dentist that you are taking Norvasc.

It is not known for certain if Norvasc can harm an unborn fetus, therefore if a woman becomes pregnant during treatment with this drug, a doctor should be immediately notified. Norvasc may contaminate breast milk so women who are breastfeeding will have to speak to their doctors about the risks.
